A New Section on AI and a Prizewinning Paper: Early-Career HSE Researchers Take Part in IEEE EDM Conference

The 27th IEEE International Conference of Young Professionals in Electron Devices and Materials (EDM) has taken place in the Altai Republic. This year, researchers from HSE University presented the results of their research and were involved in organising a new section on artificial intelligence. A paper by HSE master’s student Rodion Sidorenko was awarded third place in the research paper competition at the conference.
More than 300 participants from over 20 countries attended the 27th IEEE EDM conference, which ran from June 27 to July 1, 2026, at the Erlagol Sports Base in the Altai Republic. The conference featured 12 sections devoted to the application of technological achievements in various sectors of science and industry.
This year saw the addition of a section on AI Research and Applications co-chaired by Andrey Kuzmin, Professor at Penza State University, and Mikhail Hushchyn, Leading Research Fellow of the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis at the AI and Digital Science Institute, HSE Faculty of Computer Science. The new section quickly became the biggest in the conference—the organisers received more than 70 applications, 33 of which were accepted for the conference programme.

Representatives of HSE University took part in several sections. Kirill Katsuba, Research Assistant at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA), presented the paper ‘Synthetic Tabular Data Generation for Data Storage Systems,’ prepared as part of the HSE Mirror Laboratories project. The research was conducted in collaboration with the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre of the Engineering School of Information Technologies, Telecommunications, and Control Systems at Ural Federal University and is devoted to the application of AI methods to improve the efficiency of data centres and storage systems.

‘We investigated methods of generating synthetic data that allow us to model the behaviour of data storage systems and produce various operating scenarios. These technologies open up new opportunities for analysing the functioning of complex IT systems, predicting their performance, and testing new algorithms in a safe digital environment. This is particularly important in cases when conducting physical experiments is not possible, economically feasible, or sufficiently accurate. The results of the research can be applied to create intelligent tools for monitoring, optimising, and modelling modern engineering systems,’ explained Kirill Katsuba.
Rodion Sidorenko, first-year student of the Master’s in Computer Systems and Networks at HSE MIEM, presented the paper ‘Productivity of Moden Machine Translation Systems (Based on Translation from Russian into Kazakh)’ in the Health Informatics and Digital Humanities section. His study compared the efficiency of existing machine translation methods using the BLEU algorithm and analysed common translation errors for the given language pair. The paper was well received by the expert community and won third place in the research competition.
‘The participation of students and faculty in this event plays a major role in helping early-career HSE researchers to establish themselves. The opportunity to get expert feedback about your research and to familiarise yourself with the work of other researchers is vital to the professional development of specialists who are just starting out,’ said Rodion Sidorenko.

HSE University experts also presented their research on coding theory and neuroscience: Feodosii Kotov, visiting lecturer at HSE MIEM, presented the paper ‘Decoder-Aided Reliability Reweighting for Ordered Statistics Decoding;’ Oleg Sazonov, Research Assistant at the Centre for Bioelectric Interfaces of the HSE University Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience, presented his research titled ‘Anatomical and Electrophysiological Correlates of Deep Brain Stimulation Efficacy in Parkinson’s Disease and Dystonia;’ and Nikita Otstavnov, Junior Research Fellow at the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience, presented his work on ‘Traces of Working Memory Modality-Specific Activation.’
The conference proceedings will be submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore digital library, with the top papers becoming eligible for submission to IEEE’s periodical journals.
For more than 25 years, the IEEE EDM conference has been jointly organised by Novosibirsk State Technical University, IEEE Siberia, and IEEE Young Professionals, with support from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and industrial, educational, and scientific partners. Over the years, it has grown into a major international platform for knowledge exchange and networking among researchers.
IEEE is largest international professional association of specialists in technology, electronics, and informatics. It has developed world-famous standards such as Wi-Fi and Ethernet and publishes a significant share of the world’s technical literature.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. Researchers Assess Contributions of BRICS Countries to Leading ML/AI Conferences
The HSE Scientometrics Centre analysed more than 104,000 papers published between 2020 and 2025 and presented at ten top-level A* conferences ranked by ICORE 2026. The researchers examined the contributions of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Together, these countries accounted for around 40,800 publications, or 39.2% of the total. However, the distribution is highly uneven, and a shared BRICS research space has yet to emerge.
Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. Laboratory of Future Networks: HSE Telecommunications Research Institute Develops 5G/6G Research Testbed
The 5G/6G testbed at the HSE Telecommunications Research Institute is becoming a research platform, an educational laboratory, and a foundation for developing new software components for future networks. It makes it possible not only to observe how a mobile network operates, but also to change its operating conditions and measure the results: data-transmission speed, latency, errors, radio-resource utilisation, and other parameters. Based on the testbed, researchers plan to develop MIMO, O-RAN, xApp, and IAB technologies, as well as experiment with artificial intelligence.
‘Hedgehog’ Versus ‘Relatives’: Researchers Measure How the Brain Responds to Unexpected Words During Natural Speech
Russian neurophysiologists, including researchers from HSE University, have demonstrated the feasibility of using event-related fields (ERFs) to study brain activity during natural speech perception. The researchers showed that this approach can be applied not only to individual words but also to continuous speech. Their findings indicate that words whose meanings differ significantly from the preceding context require longer processing times. The study also reveals that the brain processes function words in two stages: first, it identifies their grammatical role and then uses this information to predict the next word. The study has been published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.
Hybrid Intelligence: Competencies in the Age of AI Discussed at Technoprom-2026
Artificial intelligence is not creating new professions, but rather transforming the nature of existing ones. This was the conclusion reached by participants in the panel session ‘Hybrid Intelligence: Digital and Human Drivers of Development,’ organised by the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) at HSE University as part of the 13th International Forum of Technological Development (Technoprom-2026). The experts discussed how the nature of work is changing, which skills are becoming increasingly sought after, and what prevents companies from fully capitalising on new technologies.
