‘Speech, Facial Expressions, and Gestures Cannot Lie’
Would you like to know whether a speaker’s trembling voice or an accidental gesture can give them away? At HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, researchers are developing an algorithm that analyses speech, facial expressions, and gestures, and determines whether information is truthful with 92% accuracy. The project has applications ranging from forensic examination and bank recruitment to fundamental research. Anna Khomenko, head of the research group and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Language and Brain at the HSE Faculty of Humanities in Nizhny Novgorod, explains how students and researchers are working together to create a corpus of video recordings, train a classifier, and prepare to introduce computer vision technology.

HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod Opens New Art and Design School Building in Historic Nizhny Novgorod Landmark
In the year marking the 30th anniversary of HSE University's campus in Nizhny Novgorod, a new academic building for the Art and Design School has opened in the historic House of K. G. Ivanov, an early 20th-century architectural landmark located on Nizhny Novgorod’s main pedestrian street. The opening ceremony, attended by representatives of the Nizhny Novgorod Region government, marked an important milestone in the development of design education in the region.

HSE Scholar Presents Research on Postcards in Brazil and South Korea
Timur Khusyainov, Deputy Dean of theFaculty of Humanities atHSE University–Nizhny Novgorod, took part in two international conferences—the XVI World Congress of Rural Sociology in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and the 36th Annual Conference of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organisations (DH2026) in Daejeon, South Korea. On his way to the conferences, the researcher also visited several other places, where he presented the experience of the Pochtovoe educational project.

Mathematicians from Nizhny Novgorod and Shanghai Study System Stability
Mathematicians at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod, in collaboration with colleagues from Tongji University in Shanghai, are investigating the fundamental causes of structural stability in systems and the mechanisms underlying its disruption. In this interview with the HSE News Service, Prof. Olga Pochinka, Head of the International Laboratory of Dynamical Systems and Applications at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and leader of the project ‘Qualitative Theory of Systems of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations,’ discusses the project, which is being implemented as part of HSE University's International Academic Cooperation programme.

Neural Network Maps as a Method for Constructing Mathematical Models
Scientists from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Institute of Physics Belgrade, Serbia, are jointly exploring the application of machine learning techniques and neural networks to the study of nonlinear dynamics. Natalya Stankevich, Leading Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Topological Methods in Dynamics of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod, spoke to the HSE News Service about this international project.

Mathematician from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod Solves Equation Considered Unsolvable in Quadratures Since 19th Century
Mathematician Ivan Remizov from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences has made a conceptual breakthrough in the theory of differential equations. He has derived a universal formula for solving problems that had been considered unsolvable in quadratures for more than 190 years. This result fundamentally reshapes one of the oldest areas of mathematics and has potential to have important implications for fundamental physics and economics. The paper has been published in Vladikavkaz Mathematical Journal.

HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod Students Win GORKYCODE City Hackathon
This was the second hackathon organised by the Analytical Centre of Nizhny Novgorod and the city’s Digital Transformation Department. Eighteen student teams from the city's major higher education institutions participated, spending 52 hours developing innovative, AI-powered digital products designed to benefit Nizhny Novgorod and its residents.

From Attachés to Speakers: HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod Students Take Part in World Youth Festival Assembly
In September 2025, Nizhny Novgorod became the centre of the international youth movement, hosting around 2,000 participants from 120 regions of Russia and abroad at the World Youth Festival Assembly. Students of HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod’s Foreign Languages and Intercultural Business Communication, Fundamental and Applied Linguistics, and International Bachelor’s in Business and Economics programmes were involved in the event in a variety of roles, from attachés and volunteers to performers and speakers.

'Science Knows No National Borders'
Foreign scientists successfully continue their work in HSE University laboratories, combining fundamental and applied research to achieve significant results. HSE News Service has spoken to Professor Panos Pardalos, Head of the Laboratory of Algorithms and Technologies for Networks Analysis at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, about its work.

Russian Scientists Assess Dangers of Internal Waves During Underwater Volcanic Eruptions
Mathematicians at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod and the A.V. Gaponov-Grekhov Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences studied internal waves generated in the ocean after the explosive eruption of an underwater volcano. The researchers calculated how the waves vary depending on ocean depth and the radius of the explosion source. It turns out that the strongest wave in the first group does not arrive immediately, but after a significant delay. This data can help predict the consequences of eruptions and enable advance preparation for potential threats. The article has been published in Natural Hazards. The research was carried out with support from the Russian Science Foundation (link in Russian).
